What do I need to start?

To get started you need nutrients, light and either seeds/cuttings/plants.

Nutrients: There are two basic nutrient formulas to consider when feeding your plants, and both include Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), and Potassium (K). The first formula is geared towards vegetative growth (stems and leaves), and has a higher ratio of nitrogen (e.g. N-P-K value around 3-2-4). The second formula encourages fruiting and flowering, and requires less nitrogen and more potassium (e.g. N-P-K value around 2-3-5). More info below in the “What nutrient products do you recommend” line item.

Light: Lighting needs vary depending on plant type, but most will prefer an unobstructed south, west or east window with direct light. During winter months—or if you don’t receive direct light or have a north-facing window—you can supplement with a grow light. More info below in the “How much light do I need” line item.

Seeds/Cuttings/Plants: Seeds will need to be started in a seed starter cube (included with our seed starter kit). Cuttings are taken from another plant, and should be dipped in a rooting hormone then placed in a seed starter cube. Specific plants transplant really well, including basil and rosemary, and just need to have 70% of the soil rinsed off of their roots. Additional information is included in the instruction manual that ships with the planter.

What is top-feed hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a system for growing with a solution of water and nutrients in a soilless medium. In a top-fed active hydroponic system, a pump moves the water and nutrient solution from a reservoir up to plant roots, where the roots take what they need and the rest recycles back into the reservoir. Hydroponics offers a method of cultivation that’s clean, sustainable and yields fantastic results. Plants thrive because they get fed when they need it, where they need it. When compared to soil gardening, hydroponics uses an estimated 80% less water, grows plants 30% faster, and occupies ¼ of the space.

When a planter is labeled “self-watering” it most likely utilizes passive hydroponics (like our Garden Jars). Passive hydroponic planters feature a wicking system with soil or soilless grow medium. Passive hydroponic planters don’t grow plants as quickly as active, and have a slightly more limited selections of plants that will thrive.

What nutrient product do you recommend?

We recommend using organic liquid nutrients, which are a mix of kelp (seaweed) and other natural products, and can be found online or at hydroponic stores and boutique garden centers. Our current favorite is Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Grow for vegetation and Botanicare Pure Blend Pro Bloom for flowers for fruiting. We are one of the few online retailers that offers Botanicare’s Pure Blend Pro in pint-sized containers.

How much light do I need?

Substantial light and proper temperatures are crucial for fast growth, healthy plants, and high yields. Your planter should be placed in a well lit location—unobstructed south or west-facing windows will produce the best results. Most leafy greens want at least 4-6hrs of direct light, while flowering and fruiting plants want 10-12hrs. Even with limited light you have plant options, including chives, lemon balm, mint, sage, shiso, lettuce, arugula, kale, Swiss chard, spinach, peas and a variety of houseplants. The optimal temperature for most plants is 65⁰-75⁰F

Supplemental light—especially during winter months—enables year-round indoor growing and fills the gaps during dark days. Herbs and leafy greens will benefit from a fluorescent light bulbs (tubes or CFLs). LED grow lights are becoming more popular and efficient, and are available in two color spectrums—blue and red. Blue wavelengths are ideal for the vegetation and red wavelengths are designed for the flowering and fruiting stages. H.I.D. (High Intensity Discharge) grow lights, such as Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium, are common in commercial indoor growing.

Seeds take 14-21 days to sprout, depending on seed type. Herbs will be ready to harvest in 2-3 months.

When should I start them?

Herbs can be started year round as they require less light than fruiting and flowering plants. East, south or west facing windows are preferred otherwise supplemental lighting should be used.

Can these be used outdoors?

Yes. Instructions for using seed starters in traditional garden are in the included growing guide.

Do you ship internationally?

Due to seed import restrictions we cannot ship our 3 Pot Seed Starter kits to most countries outside the U.S. and Canada.

What is the return policy?

3 Pot Seed Starter Kit - Peppers
Includes Jalapeno, Habanero, Red Thai Pepper

$5 Shipping

Applies to domestic orders
(excluding Alaska and Hawaii

Modern Sprout’s Seed Starter Kits provide everything you need to sprout three tasty plants for an inspired kitchen. Pair this kit with our 3-Pot Hydroponic Planter or a soil-based container of your choosing. Seeds are thoughtfully sourced to be successful in a small space garden – either indoor or outdoor.

Made in the USA and designed for outdoor or indoor use.

Usage

Soak the seed starter cube in lukewarm water for 15 minutes, then add a few seeds to the center hole of each cube. Place a seed starter cube in the center of each net pot. The top of the cube should be approximately ½” below the top of the pot. The black feeding tube should be aligned so it directly touches the side of the cube. Fill each pot with clay pellets, covering feeding tube but not the top of the cube. Cover each net pot with a greenhouse dome and set the planter’s timer to “seeds”.

Once sprouts establish a second or third set of leaves, remove greenhouse dome and add a single layer of clay pellets on top of the grow cube to keep light off the sponge material and prevents algae growth.

Further details about starting from seed including nutrient use are available in your planters manual

What’s included my the kit?

  • Certified Organic Jalapeno, Habanero and Red Thai Pepper Seeds
  • Composted Bark Seed Starter Cubes
  • Greenhouse Domes
  • Garden Markers
  • Growing Guide

How long do they take to grow?

Seeds take 14-21 days to sprout, depending on seed type. Peppers will be ready to harvest in 4-5 months.

When should I start them?

As peppers mature they will need a lot more light and warmth. Because of this we recommend starting peppers in late winter to early spring. Doing this will take advantage of longer days and provide the most natural light for your plants as their fruit sets in.

Can these be used outdoors?

Yes. Instructions for using seed starters in traditional garden are in the included growing guide.

What types of plants pair with the Biodome?

Select up to 4 plants. One for the canopy, understory, shrub layer and floor. Explore a variety of terrarium plants at your local garden center. Here are some of our favorites:

– Venus Fly Trap
– Sundew
– Plant Nepenthes
- Insect Trap Basket
– African violets (Saintpaulia spp.)
– Baby’s tears (Soleirolia soleirolii)
– Small ferns and the polka dot plant or freckleface (Hypoestes).
– Begonias
– Mini Bromeliads
– Club Mosses (great if you wanted a bit more height- better option than adding another plant)

Set-Up Instructions & Tips

Select up to 4 plants. One for the canopy, understory, shrub layer and floor. Choose plants with similar needs. For ground cover we suggest pebbles and pieces of moss. We recommend the Bottle Babies brand or similar small terrarium plants in max 7cm pots.

Add 2 tablespoons of activated charcoal and pebbles in the base for drainage.

If potted plant soil is dry, water first. Then remove plants from their pots, keeping the majority of soil intact.

Arrange your plants on top of the drainage layer. Use larger stones to hold the plants in position and gently compact. Remaining soil from the pots can be used to stabilize plants but additional potting mix is not required. A low profile looks best in Biodome.

Use stones and pebbles to fill any gaps. Avoid them touching the perimeter where the glass top will locate. Decorate with lichen sticks or other feature pieces.

Mist with filtered water and place the lid. Choose a position for your Biodome that has natural light for at least 2 hours a day but keep away from direct sun. The opening in the glass top is designed for ventilation and occasional top up watering. Lift the lid once a fortnight to mist the shrub and floor layers and groom your plants.

Pay attention to the effects of air-conditioning and the seasons. Keep and follow the care instructions tag from your plants. Get in tune with your plants by observing your terrarium daily.

How do you care for the glass and marble?

Glass: Rinse any dirt before wiping to avoid scratching, pat dry with a soft, clean, cotton cloth and polish with the supplied microfiber bag.

Marble: Marble is a naturally porous material so some discoloration is expected. Avoid harsh chemicals to clean your Sanctuary base. Use warm soapy water and embrace the imperfections.

Glass: Rinse any dirt before wiping to avoid scratching, pat dry with a soft, clean, cotton cloth and polish with the supplied microfiber bag.

Concrete: The advantage of concrete is it keeps the moss cool, the concrete has been sealed but still absorbs more water than the other materials. Saturating the base in water first helps to keep the moisture inside Sanctuary. The cork pad protects your tabletop.

DIY Garden Jar Kit - 3pk Stainless Self-Watering Inserts
Create Your Own Self-Watering Indoor Grow Kits

$5 Shipping

Applies to domestic orders
(excluding Alaska and Hawaii)

You asked and we delivered! We are now giving customers the option to purchase JUST our stainless steel net pots, which can be added to any wide mouth canning jar to create a self-watering planter. This Net Pot 3PK also includes three wicks. Pair with our replant kits, or your own potting soil and seeds, then water and set in a sunny window. Recommended plant types include herbs, leafy greens and other seed starting. Self-watering set-up also works great with transplants (just be careful not to damage the roots when transplanting).

Designed to be reused.

  • 3x Stainless Steel Net Pots
  • 3x Polypropylene Wicking Strips

Wicking system works best with water-loving herbs like basil, cilantro, parsley. The system may provide too much moisture for dry herbs like rosemary, thyme, lavender.

These inserts also work great for transplanting into. Young seedlings will acclimate into the new growing environment over a week or so.

Specs

Net Pot Size: 2.5” h x 3” (Fits wide mouth pint and quart jars)
Wick: 13"
Weight: 3oz

How long does it take to grow?

Seeds take 5-28 days to sprout, depending on seed type, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2+ months. Continuous harvesting will encourage a bushy plant and greater yield.

How long will it last?

Inserts can be used for many plantings.  Stainless net pot will not rust and synthetic wicking strip can be washed in hot water to clean.

How much sun will it need?

Herbs require at least 6 hours of direct light daily, and should be put in an unobstructed window that faces south, west or east (southwest is the best option). During winter months—or if you don’t have an unobstructed window—you can supplement with a grow light. Learn more about our lighting recommendations here.

Can I put it outside?

Garden Jars are designed for indoor use, but can be put outside. Be mindful that the planter does not have a drain hole, and if the reservoir floods it may drown the roots. Bring your Garden Jar inside if temps dip below 55⁰ or above 80⁰.

How do passive hydroponics work?

Passive hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. A combination of an inert porous growing medium and a wick transports water and nutrients to the plant roots via capillary action. The nutrient solution (water and fertilizer) are held in a reservoir and taken up as needed, providing the perfect balance of water to oxygen.

Do you ship internationally?

Due to seed import restrictions we cannot ship our Garden Jars to most countries outside the U.S. and Canada.

How long do they take to grow?

Seeds take 5-18 days to sprout, depending on seed type. Transplant outdoors according to instructions and harvest throughout the season.

When should I start them?

Instructions provide specific start times for each plant type, and revolve around your region’s spring frost date.

Why is it important to start seeds indoors?

Starting seeds indoors gives you a jump on the growing season that results in earlier and larger harvest.  It also allows you to grow a greater variety of plants than what is commercially available at garden centers and other stores.

Do you ship internationally?
