Why isn't my bulb growing?

If roots haven't started growing in 10-12 days, place vase in fridge until they do. (This may take up to 5 days). Bulbs can also rot if they come in contact directly with water. It is imperative that you follow the instructions and keep the water level low - no more than 1" from the base of the vase.

Can I replant the bulb?

Yes. After the final bloom of your flower fades away, cut the stem off right above the bulb. Move your plant to a warm and sunny window to encourage new leaf growth. Water regularly and fertilize the plant once monthly with a soluble fertilizer formulated for potted flowering plants. During the summer the bulb will store energy for the next bloom. Stop watering your amaryllis 12 to 14 weeks before the desired bloom time. Place in a cool area (ideally 55 degrees) and remove the dead foliage from the bulb as it occurs. Allow bulb to completely dry out. After about eight weeks of dormant storage your bulb is ready to be replanted.

Weight: 13oz

How long does it take to grow?

White Spruce seeds take 10-20 days to sprout, and will slowly grow over the course of several years.

How long will it last?

The Spruce will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light. Trees grow slowly, but in turn provide years of enjoyment! The coco pot can be transplanted into the ground to grow a full size tree. To learn if your region is conducive to growing Spruce trees, please contact the Master Gardening extension office in your state.

How much sun will it need?

Consider the time of year and your region’s climate. Spruce thrive in temps between 45°-75°F and with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Starting in Mar-Sept will provide longer days and thus optimal light. If starting during cooler months, it’s recommended that you supplement natural light with a grow light (fluorescent or LED).

Can I put it outside?

Garden Jars are designed for indoor use, but can be put outside. Be mindful that the planter does not have a drain hole, and if the reservoir floods it may drown the roots. Bring your Garden Jar inside if temps dip below freezing.

How is it reusable?

The recycled glass grow medium and polypro wick can both be reused—simply rinse with hot water. Add a new coco pot, seeds and use soil or coco pith to help seeds germinate. Use a water soluble fertilizer and follow its instructions.

How do passive hydroponics work?

Passive hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. A combination of an inert porous growing medium and a wick transports water and nutrients to the plant roots via capillary action. The nutrient solution (water and fertilizer) are held in a reservoir and taken up as needed, providing the perfect balance of water to oxygen.

Do you ship internationally?

Due to seed import restrictions we cannot ship our Garden Jars to most countries outside the U.S. and Canada.

Sprout time: 10-20 days. Spruce will slowly grow over the course of several years.

Specs

Size: 4"x4"x5"
Weight: 11oz

How long does it take to grow?

Spruce seeds take 10-20 days to sprout. Spruce will slowly grow over the course of several years.

Why haven't my seeds sprouted?

Some seeds may fail to germinate (this is nature). If sprouts don’t appear in 3-4 weeks, the seeds may have been planted too deep, growing medium is too dry or wet, or temps are too low. In dry climates or during cooler months, consider creating a greenhouse effect by placing the empty grow medium bag over the planter. Punch a few holes for ventilation. Remove the bag once sprouts are 1” tall.

Spruce trees likes abundant moisture at the roots. Coco/growing medium should feel like a damp sponge but not be soggy.

If temps outside drop below 40°F, remove planter from window to prevent cold damage.

How much sun does it need?

Spruce thrive in temps between 45°-75°F and with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight (an unobstructed south or west-facing window is best). Starting in Mar-Sept will provide longer days and thus optimal light. If starting during cooler months, it’s recommended that you supplement natural light with a grow light (fluorescent or LED).

Can I transplant this and grow a full-sized tree?

This waxed planter is designed to grow a small White Spruce plant; however, in certain regions you can transplant it into the ground to grow into a full size tree. Spruce trees are native to northern regions in North America. To determine if you can transplant your spruce outside contact your state's Master Gardener Program: http://www.ahs.org/gardening-resources/master-gardeners

Transplant outside into a location with partial to full sun after the threat of frost has passed, and tree sprouts are at least 6“-9” tall. Prior to transplanting, harden off plant for 5-7 days by placing it outdoors in partial sun during the day, and bringing it indoors at night.
