How long does it take to grow?

Basil seeds take 7-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2+ months. Parsley seeds take 14-30 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2+ months. Mint seeds take 7-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 3+ months. Continuous harvesting will encourage a bushy plant and greater yield.

How long will it last?

A basil plant will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light; however, after 3-6 months it will develop a woody stem and the leaves will become a bit bitter. Parsley and mint plants will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light. Plants can be continuously harvested for 6+ months. If flowers appear pick them to prevent the plant from going to seed.

How much sun will it need?

Herbs require at least 6 hours of direct light daily, and should be put in an unobstructed window that faces south, west or east (southwest is the best option). Why haven't my seeds sprouted?

Some seeds may fail to germinate (this is nature). If sprouts don’t appear in 3-4 weeks, the seeds may have been planted too deep, growing medium is too dry or wet, or temps are too low. In dry climates or during cooler months, consider creating a greenhouse effect by placing the empty grow medium bag over the planter. Punch a few holes for ventilation. Remove the bag once sprouts are 2” tall.

Poppy seeds require darkness to germinate and should be placed in a cool, dark area (55°-65°F).

My sprouts seem weak?

If plant appears weak and spindly, there is either not enough light or temps are not in the optimal range. Try a different window or consider supplementing with a grow light. During the outdoor growing season you can place the planter outside temporarily to jump start your plant after it has sprouted (just make sure to bring the planter indoors if it rains).

I'd like a bigger, more robust plant. Can I transplant this outside?

This waxed planter is designed for indoor use to grow a small Poppy plant; however, you can transplant it into a pot or the ground for a larger and more robust plant.

Transplant outside into a location with full sun after the threat of frost has passed, and sprouts are 2" tall. Prior to transplanting, harden off plant for 5-7 days by placing it outdoors in partial sun during the day, and bringing it indoors at night.

Prepare the location by digging a hole about twice the size of the plant. If the soil needs amending, purchase a fertilizer and follow it's instructions.

Remove root ball from kraft planter as carefully as possible to prevent root damage. To do this, you may need to cut the kraft planter. Place plant in hole, fill with soil add touch of water (or nutrient solution) and gently tamp.

Are poppies edible?

NO! Do not eat poppies and keep out of reach of children.

How much sun will it need?

Herbs require at least 6 hours of direct light daily, and should be put in an unobstructed window that faces south, west or east (southwest is the best option). Can I put it outside?

Garden Jars are designed for indoor use, but can be put outside. Be mindful that the planter does not have a drain hole, and if the reservoir floods it may drown the roots. Bring your Garden Jar inside if temps dip below 55⁰ or above 80⁰.

How is it reusable?

The stainless steel net pot and recycled glass grow medium can both be reused—simply rinse with hot water. Add new seeds and use soil or coco pith to help seeds germinate. Use a water soluble fertilizer and follow its instructions.

How do passive hydroponics work?

Passive hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil. A combination of an inert porous growing medium and a wick transports water and nutrients to the plant roots via capillary action. The nutrient solution (water and fertilizer) are held in a reservoir and taken up as needed, providing the perfect balance of water to oxygen.

How long does it take to grow?

Basil seeds take 7-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2+ months. Oregano seeds take 10-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 2-3 months. Mint seeds take 7-14 days to sprout, and will be ready to start harvesting in 3+ months. Continuous harvesting will encourage a bushy plant and greater yield.

How long will it last?

A basil plant will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light; however, after 3-6 months it will develop a woody stem and the leaves will become a bit bitter. An oregano plant will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light. Harvest entire stems just as plants are coming into bloom, cutting back to about 2" above the base of the plant. An established planting can be cut back two to six times during the growing season. A mint plants will continue to grow with sufficient nutrients and light.
