What types of plants pair with the Biodome?

Select up to 4 plants. One for the canopy, understory, shrub layer and floor. Explore a variety of terrarium plants at your local garden center. Here are some of our favorites:

– Venus Fly Trap
– Sundew
– Plant Nepenthes
- Insect Trap Basket

– Baby’s tears (Soleirolia soleirolii)
– Small ferns and the polka dot plant or freckleface (Hypoestes).
– Begonias
– Mini Bromeliads
– Club Mosses (great if you wanted a bit more height- better option than adding another plant)

Set-Up Instructions & Tips

Select up to 4 plants. One for the canopy, understory, shrub layer and floor. Choose plants with similar needs. For ground cover we suggest pebbles and pieces of moss. We recommend the Bottle Babies brand or similar small terrarium plants in max 7cm pots.

Add 2 tablespoons of activated charcoal and pebbles in the base for drainage.

If potted plant soil is dry, water first. Then remove plants from their pots, keeping the majority of soil intact.

Arrange your plants on top of the drainage layer. Use larger stones to hold the plants in position and gently compact. Remaining soil from the pots can be used to stabilize plants but additional potting mix is not required. A low profile looks best in Biodome.

Use stones and pebbles to fill any gaps. Avoid them touching the perimeter where the glass top will locate. Decorate with lichen sticks or other feature pieces.

Mist with filtered water and place the lid. Choose a position for your Biodome that has natural light for at least 2 hours a day but keep away from direct sun. The opening in the glass top is designed for ventilation and occasional top up watering. Lift the lid once a fortnight to mist the shrub and floor layers and groom your plants.

Pay attention to the effects of air-conditioning and the seasons. Keep and follow the care instructions tag from your plants. Get in tune with your plants by observing your terrarium daily.

How do you care for the glass and marble?

Glass: Rinse any dirt before wiping to avoid scratching, pat dry with a soft, clean, cotton cloth and polish with the supplied microfiber bag.

Marble: Marble is a naturally porous material so some discoloration is expected. Avoid harsh chemicals to clean your Sanctuary base. Use warm soapy water and embrace the imperfections.

Mist your plants every few days. Open terrariums are for plants that require bright but indirect light and more room for soil.

Set-Up Instructions & Tips

1. Collect your plants, 2 small terrarium plants will work best.
2. Shake off any excess soil.
3. Fill the insert with some small stones and activated charcoal. If you have purchased a marble or concrete version you can pierce the insert to allow excess water to drain into the base.
4. Place your plants in the center, gently press down soil around the plants.
5. Add any large decorative stones, this may also help hold the plants in place.
6. Smaller stones and moss can help to cover any remaining area.
7. Give the arrangement a good misting.
8. Ensure stones are not protruding over the edge where the glass will rest and wipe down the silicon insert.
9. Place insert into the base.
10.Gently locate in a bright room with indirect light and place the glass top.

How do you care for the glass, cork & silicon?

Glass: Rinse any dirt before wiping to avoid scratching, pat dry with a soft, clean, cotton cloth and polish with the supplied microfiber bag.

Cork: Just use a sponge or rag and a solution of basic soapy water to gently scrub the cork. If the cork isn’t that dirty, that’s all you need! If there is a stain, wash the cork first and see if that does the trick. If not, sandpaper is your friend. Gently sand the stained area. Blow the dust away and check periodically on how your stain is looking. Sand until the stain or mark is removed. Rinse the cork with water and dry with a clean cloth.

Silicon: Silicon can be washed with warm soapy water.

For happy moss, choose a position for your Sanctuary that has natural light for at least 2 hours a day, out of direct sunlight. Moss receives its nutrients through its tiny leaves. Watch the condensation naturally hydrate the moss foliage and drop from the top’s conical profile. Water when moss appears dry or when condensation ceases forming. Pay attention to the effects of air-conditioning and the seasons and stay in tune with your Sanctuary by reading condensation cues.

How do you care for mossarium?

Keep in a cool place with natural sunlight but out of direct sunlight. Spray with mister if looking dry. Mossariums are great for low maintenance greenery. They will condensate a little more in warmer months and may require weekly ventilation- top off- depending on the plant and location of the vessel. During dry months, you may need to mist with water when moss appears dry or when condensation ceases forming. Pay attention to the effects of air-conditioning and the seasons and stay in tune with your Sanctuary by reading condensation cues.

Set-Up Instructions & Tips

1. Cut it or gently break apart to fit the base, approximately 7cm diameter. Some overhang is fine.

3. Mist the moss to lush it up (You can add a splash of water in the reservoir if the moss is dry).
4. Place the top.
5. Manage the environment further by opening side ventilation when necessary. Spritz one a week or as required. Condensation is normal and part of the natural process of the mossarium. If you think the moss is too wet and rotting, open the vents and give some indirect sunlight. Water less. Open the vents if condensation is excessive (we love this though as you will begin to see a drip forming on the teardrop shape). Moss does do well with occasional indirect sunlight.

Glass: Rinse any dirt before wiping to avoid scratching, pat dry with a soft, clean, cotton cloth and polish with the supplied microfiber bag.

Timber (Oak and Walnut): We finish the timber bases by hand with bee’s wax as this provides a beautiful, satin natural finish. In some cases, the timber may dry out during shipping.

To moisturize the timber base we recommend Gilly Stephenson’s Restoring & New Timber Polish. Alternately, you can use bee’s wax based furniture waxes. Apply sparingly, one to three coats as required (one soft cloth to apply and one soft cloth to buff back), ensuring that the surface is dry to the touch between each coat. Provided the timber is not tacky to the touch, you can follow with the next application.

Silicon: Silicon can be washed with warm soapy water.

How do you care for mossarium?

Keep in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Spray with mister if looking dry. Mossariums are great for low maintenance greenery. They will condensate a little more in warmer months and may require weekly ventilation- top off- depending on the plant and location of the vessel.

2. Place it over the insert and gently tuck in the edges. You can rub your finger around the serrated edge to break the moss apart.

The teardrop form of the top directs condensation back onto the foliage, emulating nature’s water cycle. Perfect for small spaces, desktops, bookshelves and wet areas, Sanctuary comes with a mister, microfiber cloth and template to trim the moss to the perfect size.

Modern Sprout is thrilled to be the exclusive US distributor of Australian-based Botanica.

Size: 3.5” d x 4.3” h

2. Place it over the insert and gently tuck in the edges. You can rub your finger around the serrated edge to break the moss apart.

Acrylic: Rinse any dirt before wiping to avoid scratching, pat dry with a soft, clean, cotton cloth and polish with the supplied microfiber bag.

Select up to 4 plants. One for the canopy, understory, shrub layer and floor. Explore a variety of terrarium plants at your local garden center.
